~Objects and Assemblage by Heather Hug
For decades, I have collected objects to use in my sculpture. I have always been drawn to old, worn, and odd things, beginning most likely with books, furniture and tools owned by my grandparents. When I realized I could combine these objects, give them another use, or give them importance by putting them in sculpture, I became obsessed with finding and collecting “things.”
I have stockpiled anything unique or sculpture-worthy to use in combination with wood or metal containers, hand-built structures or my own ceramic figures. My collections have included everything from bottles to hair cuttings to tools and even a huge box of cast teeth. I would find these things at resale shops, antique shops, garage sales, and rummaging through people’s trash. When friends and customers became familiar with my love and use of objects, they began saving and bringing me things that they or their families thought might be useful in my work.
Recently, I have decided to go in a new direction with my art and move from 3D sculpture to 2D drawing. I no longer have a need to hold onto my objects. I am releasing my collections back into the world for others to discover and treasure. Some objects are as found, and some I have combined into functional or decorative assemblages and furnishings.
